REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
If you believe that your Town or Parish Council (ie not Somerton) is behaving in a manner similar to Somerton's, please email information, in confidence, to Muck&Brass. Muck&Brass is collating such information in order to assess the scale of these problems, countrywide.
The publication of the External Auditor's 'Report in the Public Interest' in respect of Somerton Town Council illustrates the almost complete absence of any real accountability of our elected representatives.
Muck&Brass will consider the influences to which our processes of local government are subject. In part this is because it is ever more clear that the activities of the old Somerton Town Council are quite common-place across the United Kingdom. What is also clear is that the various supposedly regulatory bodies regulate within very strict limits. Those limits do little to constrain the ability of councillors to promote their own interests or those of their colleagues, business associates and friends.
Importantly, the changes proposed by the current Government, will lead to even less accountability, if such a thing is possible.
